FILE - In this Oct. 7, 2011 file picture German author Guenter Grass, listens during a press conference in Berlin. German literature Nobel laureate Grass says Israel's decision to bar him from visiting the country following a critical poem reminds him of similar moves by dictatorial governments in the past. Grass said in a reaction published Wednesday April 11, 2012 by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that he has previously only been barred from entering a country by then Communist-ruled East Germany and the military junta in Myanmar about 25 years ago. Grass says the tone of Israel's announcement on Sunday reminded him of the reasoning then given by East Germany's spy minister Erich Mielke. In a poem published last week, the 84-year-old Grass criticized what he described as Western hypocrisy over Israel's nuclear program and labeled the country a threat to Guenter Grass says Israel's decision to bar him from visiting the country because of his poem criticizing the Jewish state reminds him of similar steps that dictatorial governments have taken against him.

In an unusual leak last year, a Swedish newspaper revealed the jury's selection — British professor Robert Edwards — before the announcement. The committee has since applied even stricter rules on keeping their discussions and documents surrounding potential candidates secret. Two scientists who unlocked some of the mysteries linked to obesity or a professor who figured out how to make stem cells without human embryos could be candidates for the medicine award when the first of the 2011 Nobel Prizes are announced on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011. The prize committees don't give any clues — they even keep nominations secret for 50 years — but winners usually have won many other awards and distinctions before they are considered for a Nobel.
